Lake Mary Prep's Young Citizens Get a Lesson in Government, Straight from the Top!

The classrooms of our very own Lake Mary Prep first graders transformed into mini-capitals, as they embarked on an exciting journey into the world of government. As part of their government unit, these bright young minds got to experience firsthand how different levels of government work together to serve their community.

To make the abstract concept of government tangible, our lower school principal and head of school, Mrs. Varitek and Mr. Emerton, stepped into the roles of "mayor" and "governor," respectively. This engaging simulation allowed the students to understand the responsibilities and perspectives of local and state leaders.

But the excitement didn’t stop there! The students were thrilled to welcome Lake Mary Mayor David Mealor as a guest speaker, completing the governmental hierarchy by representing the "president" level. This visit provided a unique opportunity for the children to see how these different levels of government connect and collaborate.

Mayor Mealor wasn’t alone. He was joined by Sergeant Ritter of the Police Department and Tina O'Brien, the Fire Department's Community Risk Reduction (CRR) Manager. This dynamic team brought real-world examples, showcasing the vital roles our public servants play in keeping our community safe and thriving.

Our first graders had prepared a thoughtful list of questions for Mayor Mealor, eager to learn about his roles and responsibilities. They asked insightful questions, demonstrating a genuine interest in how their city is run. Mayor Mealor, Sgt. Ritter, and Ms. O'Brien patiently answered each question, sharing their experiences and insights.

The visit was a resounding success, providing a fun and educational experience for our students. They learned valuable lessons about civic engagement, the importance of public service, and the interconnectedness of our government.
